Battle 5 is scheduled

The League will be meeting tomorrow to play our 5th game.  That will be Saturday, April 14th.  We’re all meeting up for Give to Game, which is a board game convention benefiting the Bastrop County Food Pantry.  It’s a great event supporting a great cause.  It runs today (April 13th) from 5 PM to 1 AM and tomorrow (April 14th) from 9 AM to 1 AM.

The League will be playing first thing on Saturday morning at 9 AM.

(And the posts for the summaries of battles 3 and 4 are written, but the pictures just need to be taken off the camera.  But since I’m in the middle of a move, the camera is away from the computer.  Sorry!)

Battles 3 AND 4 Completed!

On Tuesday, March 27, the League met to do battle.  We had so much fun that we pressed on to the fourth battle!  Pictures need to be downloaded and results written up, but I will tease with this:

The world had MAJOR changes.

Battle 2 Results

Board at the start of turn 4.

Turn four saw Jonathan L. continue to ravage Ian by taking Southeast Asia and Indonesia, breaking up Ian’s hold on Australia.

Valerie decided the time was right and attacked Jonathan L’s American front. She attempted, but did not succeed, in taking Central America.

Ian rallied and retook Indonesia, thus re-establishing his Australian hold.

Angela pushed into East Africa, taking it from Jonathan L and moving her into the African front.

Jonathan G. decided that Valerie was a threat to his HQ, and pushed into Alaska, then failed in an attack on the Northwest Territory.

Jonathan L. decided that it was time for a big move in turn five.  He hammered Valerie’s buildup in Central America, then pushed his attack all the way up North America to her home in Greenland.  After a heated battle, he takes Greenland, which contained Valerie’s headquarters.  Jonathan L. gets his 4th red star and wins.

Jonathan L. signs the board for his victory while "Ogre Battle" played for his victory.

Post-game changes

Angela and Valerie decide the location of their minor cities.

  • Jonathan L. added a major city, Kublai City, to Venezuela, which

    Deep thought about minor cities.

    already contains a fortification.

  • Valerie added the minor city of Guam to Kamchatka
  • Ian added a minor city, Talon City, to Western Australia
  • Angela added the minor city of Angelia to Greenland
  • Jonathan G. added the minor city of Peanut Butter Piopolis to China

Angela assigns her minor city in Greenland.

Since not everyone got sticker cards, no bunkers or scars were added to the board.  No extra coins were added to resources, nor were any scars canceled or fortifications built.  Only one minor city remains, after which our first packet can be opened.

Post-game decisions.

Battle 2 is done.

Battle 2 was mercilessly fought, and the results and pictures are waiting to be posted.

Battle 2 is coming

The second fight for the world will be taking place on the evening of Monday, January 23rd.

Can Angela secure another victory, or will another power rise to take the win?

Drafting Armies

The initial plan for Legacy League was for us all to play the same army through all 15 games.  But after reading some reports of groups that did that, they found that it took away an important aspect of the game.  So, instead, we’ve decided to go ahead and do the per-game army draft, as it states in the rules.  We feel that while that takes away some of the cool quasi-role-playing aspect of it, it’s more than made up for in game balance and function.

Battle 1 Results

Battle 1 took place on Sunday, January 16, 2012 at Rockin’ Tomato as part of South Austin Game Night.  The game ended in just two turns on Earth 5476.  (If you are concerned about spoilers for the game, note that no packets were opened in this game, and in future sessions, I’ll try to keep spoilers separate.)

Jonathan L. Picks Die Mechaniker Starting Power

Before the game (and before choosing the starting locations), we did our world setup, including placing extra resources and choosing our starting powers:

  • Die Mechaniker: “Your starting HQ is always treated as FORTIFIED when you defend it.”
  • Saharan Republic: “You can make your maneuver at any point during your turn.”
  • Imperial Baklania: “When recruiting troops, round up when dividing your territory and population by 3, not down.”
  • Khan Industries: “At the start of your turn, place one troop in each territory that has a HQ you control.”
  • Enclave of the Bear: “The defender subtracts 1 from his lower defense die in the first territory you attack during your turn.”

Game Summary

Jonathan L in game 1

Jonathan L. makes the first move into South America

It’s worth noting that, to start, Jonathan G. and Angela had neighbors in adjacent territories, causing some tensions before the first move was made.

Board at start of game 1

Jonathan L. started out by expanding south from Central America into South America, choosing to build up troops in Brazil rather than take the continent.

Valerie then moved south, and took Australia.

Jonathan G. chose to expand into Europe, rather than go for first blood against Angela in Russia.

After some peace talks, Ian chose to attack Jonathan in Brazil, and in an incredible show of defense, was beaten back.  He then took what was left and moved north to Europe, taking a territory from Jonathan G.

IC vs JL for SA

Seeing Jonathan G’s troops spread out, she seized the opportunity and attacked his HQ.  Jonathan attempted to fortify with a Bunker scar, but was resoundingly defeated, thus giving Angela a third Red Star.

Beginning the second turn, Jonathan L. moved north to create a barrier in Alaska thinking Valerie would take her amassed troops and sweep into North America.

Game 1 progressInstead, Valerie pushed west across Asia and into Africa, taking over Ian’s weakened HQ.  Her bloodlust unsatiated, she went for total victory and proceeded into South America in an attempt to take Jonathan L’s HQ.  However, she was held back in Venezuela, where Jonathan placed a Bunker scar.

The state of the board during game 1

Desperate, Jonathan G. expanded south with the goal of taking Ian’s former HQ (now held with 1 troop by Valerie), and trying to block Angela or Valerie from getting their 4th red star.  Valerie’s troops held tough, eliminating three of Jonathan’s attackers, but they eventually fell leaving him two defenders and the HQ.

At this point, Ian was down to just one troop in Europe.  He recruited and pushed further into Europe, hoping to block Angela’s path.

Angela was able to go around him, moving amassed troops from Russia through the Middle East and into Africa, where she took Ian’s HQ (now held by Jonathan G.) for her fourth red star and the victory.

Players and Armies Revealed!

I’m happy to announce that we’ve picked our armies, and as such, here are the five players and their armies.  These players will be running through all fifteen games with the same army, thus all contributing to the story of the world:

Each of them has a little bit of information on their player page, so pick your favorites and follow them to victory!  (While you’re at it, go ahead and like us on Facebook, too.)

Make Your Mark, Leave Your Legacy

This is the Legacy League!  We are five board gamers who have committed to playing the full 15 games of Risk Legacy.  Before the first game, each of us will pick one of the five factions which we will represent through the entire history of the world.  We’ll schedule games at least once a month, and have a year-long game told in 15 chapters.

Look here for game reports, League information, Legacy updates, and anything else that’s relevant to the game.  Please feel free to leave comments and questions, and look forward to a fantastic year of games of Risk Legacy.

Please note, if you’re about to embark upon your own Legacy, this site will contain spoilers.  As we open packets, place scars, find cities, tear up cards, and name continents, I will be saying what’s in the packets!  So if you’re sensitive toward spoilers, then keep that in mind.

Other than that, see you out there on a new world with new battles to wage!
